Gabriel Gonzalez
November Exhibition
The Americas Collection is proud to present “Polychromes”, a monumental and exceptionally energetic exhibition by one of our most talented emerging artists Gabriel Gonzalez. The monumentality part of this presentation derives from a conscious decision to repeatedly use large formats as the artist’s chosen method to deliver a pictorial explosion of colors. Furthermore, the energy transmitted by and through Gonzalez’s paintings has its origin in the inspiration drawn from master painters such as Jackson Pollock, among others.
Gabriel Gonzalez’s first exposure to the world of creative design was put in gear when he started his studies in Architecture. Like many architects before him, however, he resolved to move away from the limitations of structural principles and rational proportions to plunge into a world of spontaneous abstract expression governed by emotional responses, kinetic forces and therapeutic speed. On the other hand, his continuous use of linear compositions seems to be paying homage to his architectural background.
A self-taught artist from Panama, Gabriel Gonzalez successfully establishes a personal dialog with the viewers by appealing to their senses. His use of multiple layers of paint is accompanied by noticeable variations in their thickness application. By purposely leaving areas uncovered from the consecutive coatings of pigments, the artist allows us to have a glimpse of his painting process, which history is partially hidden underneath. This balancing act of concealing and reveling generates an interesting bouncing vibration between the colors, creating a fantastic illusion of movement with hardly any place to rest your eyes.
